Measure Before You Optimize
Open Event Viewer → Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → Diagnostics-Performance → Operational. Filter for Event ID 100. The Boot Duration field gives you a ground-truth number to optimize against.
1. Trim Startup Apps
Open Task Manager → Startup apps. Disable anything with a "High" startup impact that you don't actively need at boot (OneDrive, Teams, Spotify, Discord, OEM utilities).
2. Enable Fast Startup (Carefully)
Fast Startup hibernates the kernel for quicker boots. It conflicts with dual-boot setups and some BitLocker configurations. Toggle it under Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do.
3. Update Storage Driver
Generic Microsoft NVMe drivers are slower than the OEM-supplied ones on Samsung, WD, and Crucial drives. Install the manufacturer's driver if available.
4. Verify TRIM Is Enabled
fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify
Result should be 0 for your SSD. If it's 1, enable it with fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0.
5. Disable Unused Services
Most users don't need Connected User Experiences and Telemetry, Xbox Live Auth Manager, or Print Spooler (if you don't print). Set these to Manual rather than Disabled to preserve safety.
6. Check for Driver Stalls in Boot Trace
Install the Windows Performance Toolkit and run wpr -start GeneralProfile -filemode across a reboot. Open the resulting .etl in Windows Performance Analyzer to see exactly which driver is delaying boot.
7. Update or Disable Buggy OEM Utilities
Asus Armoury Crate, Logitech G HUB, and older Razer Synapse versions are repeat offenders for slow boots. Update to the latest version or uninstall.
8. Clean the WinSxS Component Store
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
9. Verify Memory Training Isn't Re-Running Every Boot
In UEFI/BIOS, enable Memory Context Restore and Power Down Enable (names vary by board). This skips the 10–20 second memory retraining on systems with DDR5.
10. As a Last Resort: Reset This PC
Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Keep my files → Cloud download. This produces a fresh OS image without touching personal files.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to apply these Windows 11 slow startup fixes myself?
Yes. Every step in this guide uses built-in Windows tools or official Microsoft utilities. We recommend creating a System Restore point before making registry or driver-level changes so you can roll back if needed.
Will I lose any data?
None of the procedures in this guide modify your personal files. We still recommend keeping a current backup of important documents — a good habit before any system-level repair.
Do these solutions work on both Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Yes. The instructions cover Windows 10 (22H2) and Windows 11 (23H2 and 24H2). Where steps differ between versions, we call it out explicitly.
